Panama City contains Panama’s only international airport. After landing, I would explore the city, including:

  1. The Panama Canal, one of the world’s great engineering marvels. The canal stretches 80km from Panama City on the Pacific side to Colón on the Atlantic side. Before it was built, ships had to go all the way around the tip of South America, at great cost and danger, particularly in the winter months. Around 14,500 vessels pass through the canal each year, and ships worldwide have traditionally been built with the dimensions of the canal’s original locks in mind.
  2. The BioMuseum in Panama City, an ecological museum that tells the story of Panama’s rich biodiversity and was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry.

Then I would take a day trip to the Isla de Coiba, an island off the shores of Panama that is a national park, to see the wildlife. More than two dozen species of dolphin and whale live there, as well crocodiles, turtles, snakes, and many varieties of birds.
